From 2018–2022, Two Tigers consulted with Magnum Foundation on the Photography Expanded Documentary Mentorship Program, which intended to expand creativity and diversity in the field of documentary photography in China through a balanced mix of training and practice, including space for experimental exploration of storytelling and leadership capacity building.
This program was designed after we led an extensive research process and feasibility study, honing how best to support emerging talent and create greater equity in the field. The fellowship primarily supported practitioners from under-represented backgrounds (non-Han ethnic minorities, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community). It gathered small cohorts of emerging photographers together for in-person gatherings to facilitate meaningful connections, fostering collaboration and camaraderie, as well as pairing them with seasoned photography professionals to serve as mentors, helping further guide and support their practice.

Two Tigers consulted on all aspects of the program from development to production to reporting and beyond. We recruited and maintained relationships with a robust team of collaborators, including local coordinators, translators, digital security advisors, and funders. It provided an opportunity to leverage our network of photography professionals focused on China, while integrating tools and resources from working on Emerging Arts Leaders/Los Angeles’ Protege Mentorship Program.
After two gatherings in person, the program pivoted to a virtual format. Fellows were provided comprehensive digital security support and guidance throughout. The program eventually transitioned to the U.S.-based programs pictured herewith. An offshoot of this initiative led to the virtual project incubator in collaboration with Peabody Essex Museum for the Power & Perspective: Early Photography in China exhibition.
